BUNCO SQUAD (1951). This peppy little programmer is one of those gems that makes you nostalgic for the era of the studio system. A 65-minute “B” picture from RKO, it’s a concise and entertaining romp about a detective (Robert Stirling, an actor more noted for his marriages to two famous Anns – Anne Sothern and Anne Jeffries) who’s investigating a ring of con artists preying on the wealthy through the use of séances and mediums. The ever haughty and effective Elizabeth Risdon plays one of the matrons who may or may not be involved, and the always fun Ricardo Cortez plays the criminal everyone’s after. This is the kind of movie that could turn you into a Turner Classic Movies junkie (like me!).  BUNCO SQUAD is fast, frivolous and fun!
